Veteran Top Sportsman driver Marvin Blaney is currently in intensive care following a harrowing incident during Wednesday’s second round of qualifying at the inaugural IHRA Outlaw Nitro Series, held at National Trail Raceway near Columbus, Ohio.

Blaney’s ’63 Corvette reportedly suffered a catastrophic engine explosion shortly after completing a burnout. As the car was backing up on the return path, it suddenly erupted into flames, prompting an immediate response from track safety crews.

Officials from the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) confirmed that Blaney was removed from the vehicle and transported to a nearby medical facility for further evaluation. Sources close to the racer have stated that he sustained severe burns to his arms and hands.

A heartfelt message posted to Blaney’s social media later that afternoon revealed the gravity of the situation:
“Thank you for all of the prayers, as they are desperately needed right now, period. Marvin is in intensive care from the two horrific explosions that destroyed his race car and almost took his life. His angels were watching over him. Please keep the prayers coming.”

No further updates on his condition were available at the time of publication.

The incident has cast a sombre tone over what was intended to be a celebratory debut for the IHRA Outlaw Nitro Series. The racing community has rallied in support of Blaney, a well-respected figure in the sport, with many expressing hopes for a swift and full recovery.
